A FARMER who regularly flouts the ban on hunting with dogs

says Devon and Cornwall Police still refuse to arrest him —

even after he told them about his law-breaking.

Giles Bradshaw, 41, from Rose Ash, near South Molton, said

the fact police had not yet arrested him for flushing out deer

with dogs — and, crucially, not shooting them — proved the

unworkability of the ban on hunting with dogs.

Mr Bradshaw said: “The situation is that I'm breaking the

Hunting Act on a regular basis by taking my five dogs out and

flushing out deer, which I then refuse to shoot.

“I do this with the full knowledge of Chief Constable

Stephen Otter.”

The Hunting Act stipulates that only one or two dogs must be

used to flush out deer, and any deer flushed out by dogs must

then be shot as soon as possible.

Some anti-ban campaigners say the law is vaguely drafted and

like many farmers and landowners in North Devon, Mr Bradshaw

wants the ban lifted.

He said: “The current situation is everybody knows the law

is an ass: I will not obey it, the police will not enforce it

and the MPs responsible for the mess will not admit it.”

Mr Bradshaw, a livestock farmer, bought his farm 10 years

ago and has flushed out deer at least once a week throughout

that time, he said.

Earlier this year, he circulated a letter to MPs about what

he claimed were flaws in the Hunting Act.

Among the politicians who replied was Liberal Democrat

Lembit Öpik, who wrote: “If Mr Bradshaw's situation were not so

unfortunate, it would be laughable.

“Where did the magic number of two dogs come from? I

seriously wonder whether anti-hunting people would have

supported the Hunting Act had they seen that it would force

farmers to kill animals they would prefer not to.

“The argument this law is for the benefit of wild animals

has been demolished and the sooner it is repealed the better

for all concerned.”

And Conservative MP Peter Luff said Mr Bradshaw's situation

highlighted an unintended consequence of the law.

Mr Bradshaw has spoken to Chief Constable Otter, who told

him the matter was in the hands of a wildlife crime

officer.

Barnstaple superintendent Stuart Lander, meanwhile, said the

situation was “simple”.

“We are here to enforce the law. If we get intelligence that

it's being broken, we will look into it,” he said.

But he said officers had a large number of laws to enforce

and they were obliged to prioritise which alleged offences they

investigated.

“I'm sick and tired of hearing farmers pleading poverty and blaming townies for every problem they face. They work in a failing industry and they rely on our taxes to bail them out when their poor animal husbandry cocks things up. Now they want to shoot all the Badgers! let them survive like every other industry, off their own back and on their own two feet. It occurs to me that life would be a damn sight more pleasant without farmers and bankers. Become a farmer, or a banker it's a great life, you can be **** at your job and the taxpayers will compensate you for your incompetence. Oh and you get to persecute, torture and kill animals for a bit of sport. Bonus!”

“Can I just issue a round of applause to giles, neither 4 nor against and D Williams! At least there are some people left in the countryside who actually understand it!! Yes farming is a 24 hour job, flushing deer is part of that job; all Giles is doing is protecting his land from damage. I completely agree with you Giles that deer should not have to be killed, it's ridiculous and should be up to the land owner to choose the best option for themselves. I know many farmers round here that do it but wouldn't dream of telling people about it so the fact you have brought this to the publics attention is brilliant and I sincerely hope it urges people living in the countryside to step back and actually learn what farming and pest control is all about! There's no point living in the countryside and complaining about it if you don't understand it!!

The fact people are calling you arrogant just shows how uneducated they are! Good on you and keep up the hard work”

“GEEEZ What is wrong with the Anti Hunters?? firstly it is in ANY dog/hound or predetors nature to chase other animals Even a Yorkshire terrier or a pomeranian is a predetor by nature because they are carnivours (which has been scientifically proven). Secondly have any of you ever got CLOSE to a deer hmm i dont think so with or with our a dog or dogs a deer will bolt as that is in THEIR nature with them being a prey/flight animal.
What Mr Bradshaw is doing is FAR from cruel as the deer dont even get shot, they would do the exact same thing even if he just so happened to be riding round his property with his dog in tow it is a far cry from hunting them, Antis really should get a life before they open their mouths and spout total rubbish”

“Unbelievable, truly. The comments against what Mr Bradshaw is doing are so ignorant it is truly shocking.

I suggest you re-read the article then read his comments on here. He his trying manage the deer in a NON lethal way. Deer have to managed or they will severely damage woodland property, stripping the bark and killing the trees. Before spouting your ignorant comments i suggest you learn a little about countryside management. His dogs are trained to flush the animals out of the woodland moving them on to different areas, They are not sent in to attack the deer... Just move them on by barking and creating a noise. It really stuns me to see people so arrogant and ill educated yet feel so strongly about a subject, Its almost as if you read what you wish to believe without actually seeing what is infront of your eyes.

Bill, glasgow you are a typical pig headed towny to be going around accusing Mr Bradshaw of enjoying killing the deer when he goes to lengths to NOT do this.

Jane, barnstaple get a grip dear to believe Mr Bradshaw has nothing better to do than hunt is absurd, I quite often find myself doing multiple jobs at the same time, ie i could be moving livestock, checking fences covers on wells all at the same time.

It is incredible that such a vast amount people even those who claim to live in the countryside, have very short knowledge on countryside management, people like this seem to think that the countryside is kept in check my magical elves with fairy dust. Grow up and learn a little”

“What Giles is doing is FANTASTIC!!! He is enjoying a country persuit (in the same way that people enjoy watching football, or playing rugby) without doing any damage to the deer population. Who says that because he enjoys chasing them that he has to kill them?
Just don't get me started on London or any other city foxes!”

    “Hi Giles
You have certainly created an uproar with your deer chasing!
My experience with deer round here is that if you go within 400 yards of them they run away at full speed so why all the fuss about "flushing"?
Happy new year to you and Angie”

“Oh ho ho.... Don't these people get their knickers in a twist over hunting... for goodness sakes!

What I would like to know is, if these people who bang on about hunting would allow rats to share their home and their food and their beds.... Would they like it if old foxy ate their pet rabbits, cats, chickens etc emptied their dustbins, raided their food stores, pooped in their gardens (have you ever smelt fox poo yuk) and screeched outside their windows all night.... would they just say dear little animals... fluffy likkle cutey pie rats and cuddly adorable foxys'......... or would they kill them, or trap and release them and make them someone elses problem.

At the end of the day "being cruel" takes on many different forms..... is it cruel to keep tropical fish or caged rabbits, hamsters etc is it cruel to keep a three legged dog or cat, is it cruel to keep a dog in a flat? Who knows but we do these things.... We eat meat, fish, eggs, we drink milk, we wear leather.... when we don't know how or where it has been produced... But if we all stopped doing these things what would happen to the animals then.... who would tend their needs and call (and pay for) the vet when they needed it... for it would be cruel to leave them in pain..... someone would have to shoot them when they were starving to death and bury them.... oh my goodness it just goes on and on..... (a bit like me really)... A never ending story!”

“What I am telling you Bob from Torrington is that breaking the Hunting Act by dispersing the deer in my woodland using my dogs and letting the deer escape causes them considerably less harm and suffering than obeying the Hunting Act by dispersing the deer in my woodland and then shooting all of them dead. Have you any idea what a rifle bullet does to an animal? It rips it apart! It's death is not necessarily instant. I have practiced non lethal deer management on my farm for the last ten years. Under the Hunting Act I can only continue my activities if I shoot all the deer flushed deer. I have healthy happy deer, healthy happy dogs and healthy happy trees. Everyone is a winner! Also I get a lot of pleasure from my activities which is a bonus too. Coppiced woodland is extremely ecologically sound. I've contacted the Government's "Deer Initiative" and their clear advice is to shoot the deer. Surely it is wrong for my activities to be illegal because I refuse to kill wildlife!”
