HARD WORK and fun has been the recipe for success for Kingsley School's gymnasts.

The seven-strong senior team, all students at the Bideford school, have been crowned North Devon, Devon and South West champions over the past 12 months.

And they peaked with fifth place at the finals of the national Carita House competition in Stoke-on-Trent.

That record of achievement earned them the judges' vote in the Northwood Junior Team of the Year category.

The team of Kat Parkyn, Lauren Parsons, Sophie Johns, Daisy Scott, Jasmine Boyd, Gemma Beams and Ally Lacey trained three times a week at lunchtime and after school under Gemma Braunton, their coach.

Most weekends they have been involved in competition, sometimes in different parts of the country to their team-mates.

"Some weekends there are two competitions on the same day," said Gemma. "Their success is just down to hard work."

"And we enjoy it," said Lauren.

The runners-up for this year's award were the Woolacombe Surf Lifesaving Club Nippers, who are the Devon and British pool champions and hold the county ocean title too.

Highly commended were Braunton FC under-16s after a fourth successive North Devon Youth League and Cup double.
