THINK of legendary Tottenham Hotspur goalkeepers and the two names that spring to mind are Pat Jennings and Ray Clemence.

But the Spurs Legends team which played Exeter City Legends on Sunday had a rather surprising choice as their number one.

Bideford goalie Ryan Draper answered a late call to appear in the exhibition match, played in front of almost 2,000 fans at St James' Park.

The Manchester United fan found himself playing behind a defence featuring former England internationals Gary Stevens and Graham Roberts.

Steve Perryman, Exeter's director of football and a former UEFA Cup winner with Spurs, was also on his side.

It proved a worthwhile afternoon for Draper who kept a clean sheet as Tottenham triumphed 2-0 over the Grecians old boys.

"Keeping a clean sheet for Spurs at the age of 34 — that's definitely going on my CV," laughed Draper.

"I had a couple of saves to make early doors, which was nice. Exeter had a younger, fitter side. They had the better chances and both our goals were against the run of play.

"Steve Perryman was quoted as saying I should have been man of the match, which would have been embarrassing with all the Spurs legends there."

Also featuring in the Spurs line-up were Micky Hazard, Mark Falco, Steve Sedgley and Paul Allen.

"I was hoping for Hoddle, Waddle and Gazza but none of them turned up," said Draper.

He answered the call from friend Mark Jenkins, Exeter's commercial manager, when it emerged Spurs needed a keeper.

The Exeter team included Witheridge player-manager Chris Vinnicombe and Barry McConnell who still plays regularly for Truro City.

"It was a good experience," added Draper. "Although it wasn't played at a fast pace it was competitive and it was nice to be invited."

Perryman had previously been impressed by the goalkeeper's displays in the Toolstation Premier Division.

"I think he watched me a couple of times last season when I was at Dawlish," said Draper.

"There were a few rumours going around I was going to sign for Exeter as non-contract cover, but I think they signed someone else in the end and it never materialised."

Draper, a former FA Vase winner with Taunton Town, has since returned to Bideford and is confident the Robins can mount a title bid this term.

"There is definitely a buzz about the place," he said.

"With the signings we've made I'll be disappointed if we don't finish in the top three.

"We're strong in all areas and hopefully Kevin Squire can have a run and score a few goals. That's what let us down last season, we made a load of chances and didn't put the ball in the net."
