A RED deer which strayed into a Barnstaple garden was put down after a five-hour battle to subdue and safely remove it.

Diana Lewis, from the North Devon Animal Ambulance charity, said the animal had got into the garden at Chaddiford Lane, Pilton. There was a danger it would escape onto the dual carriageway.

She said: "It would have been carnage for the animal and potentially for any people in cars which were confronted by this wild creature.

"We were called to the house at about 9am on Sunday and found the deer was behaving very abnormally.

"It was allowing people to walk right up and approach it, which you should never usually be able to do with these creatures.

"But we also noticed some blood on its head and think it may have suffered a glancing blow to the head which was affecting its behaviour.

"However, although it was allowing people to approach it, as soon as the vet tried to get close enough to get a needle into it to subdue it, the animal started to kick off — and taking on 170 kilos of wild red deer isn't funny.

"We really did try every other option, and spent five hours in the freezing cold trying to keep it from darting out onto the road, but in the end, the kindest thing to do was to humanely put it down."

“Well said from torrington- there are many other people who have also dedicated their lives to animals who arn't always looking for their next chance of an appearance in the news.
There are still so many unanswered questions. i know for a fact that a dart gun was available at the end of a phone call. Definately within the '5 hours' they said they were there for.
There is also a photo on the BBC news website of Bambi that morning. she certainly looks like her relaxed self.
Why did Ms Lewis not contact Johnny Kingdon? he knows more about deer than possibly anyone in the area!and they have previously worked together.
There is also not a single word of apology anywhere to be seen. Surely the least that can be done. A hands up apology that she unfortunately didn't make the right decisions?”

“There are LOTS of people dedicated to helping out animals, not all of them clamouring to get into the papers at every given opportunity. Many smaller animal charities and organisations have been forced to take a back seat while Mrs lewis as stolen everyone elses thunder. There are brilliant charities out there who would never in a million years have shot Bambi.
Diana Lewis isn't the only person out there when it comes to helping neglected, injured or lost animals. Please bare this in mind people!”

“no one is saying that diana has never done any good before but alot of people feel that the actions taken in this event in in some others were not needed and that she should think before she does things. once the gun has gone off it is to late to try anything else. it is just so frustrating to know that this beautiful animal has lost her life because of people who are ment to save lives not take them away. yes it would of been trajic if the bambi had got on to the road but there are hundreds od deer around there is just as great a chance that they would get on to the road does that mean you should shoot all of them to to reduce the risk factor? surely not!”

“Well Derek, You seem to be the only one to speak up for Ms Lewis. As someone who was involved with the shooting of a yearling steer near the duel carriageway a few years ago, I can say with some experience that when our heroic constabulary get involved it is shoot first and ask questions afterwards, as was in my case. A so-called marksman was flown from Exeter and once commited, nothing would stop it. Even some advice from local farmers was ignored, like letting it in a field with other cattle nearby. But as in the case of Bambi, loads of police in reflective jackets jumping up and down, blue lights flashing, there is no chance of not frightening any animal. Ms Lewis should have shown some common sense and not harrassed Bambi for five hours, This is the sort of cruelty that she was always in the news fighting against. She should come out into the open and hold her hands up and admit that she got it wrong, Prehaps then she could salvage just a little of the respect that she has certainly lost.”

“This is turning into a witch hunt against a lady whom has dedicated her life to the care of animals.
Maybe an over-reaction in this case but don't get personal.
You are all very wrapped up in this one case about a WILD deer. Again I ask, would Mrs Stentiford have claimed ownership and responsibility for any damage to gardens or, in a not too unrealistic scenario claimed to be the owner of Bambi if she had got onto the road and caused a major accident?
    I think not.
    Get over it.
Before the childish comments come in. I am Derek Gaulinner, I live in Barnstaple and I don't know any of those involved in the termination of Bambi personally. It's an opinion, as this is an open forum.”

“Why was it a battle if you could walk right up to it and approach it(Diana Lewis's words) no danger of it going onto road only if spooked by said person. Please never call her again only maybe to cuddle a kitten for photo shoot”
