Surreal vision of giant snakes, feet and chickens
FOR the second year running Animated Exeter, the South West's leading independent animation film festival, has an outpost in North Devon – at The Plough Arts Centre in Torrington. The first screening will be Surviving Life, the new film by the Czech master of animation, Jan Svankmajer.
Using a mix of cutout animation from photographs and live-action segments, Surviving Life brings with it another extraordinary offering from Jan Svankmajer's unique and surreal vision, told through the darkly humorous story of a married man who lives a double life in his dreams.
Featuring an eye-popping array of giant snakes, chickens, eggs and feet, which constantly pop out of photographed Czech buildings, Surviving Life has been described as an offbeat, "psychoanalytical comedy". Time Out magazine's verdict: "Brilliant!"
Surviving Life is at the Plough Arts Centre, Torrington on Wednesday, February 8, 8pm. Tickets: £6 (full), £5.50 (concessions), £5 (Plough supporters). Box office: 01805 624624.
