A TAXI rank in Ilfracombe is to be revoked to make room for a bus stop after the closure of the town's bus station.

North Devon Council's licensing committee moved a proposal to close the two car rank outside the Collingwood Hotel so Stagecoach can use the space as a temporary bus stop.

The company had shared Ilfracombe Bus Station with First although they never had an understanding with the owners of the site, while First did.

And now First has pulled out of North Devon the owners have decided to fence off the bus station.

Councillor Mike Edmunds raised fears buses wouldn't be able to round the corner at the bottom of Ropery Road once the site is fenced off, if taxis remain in place at a six car rank there.

He said the council should reduce the number of cars allowed to wait there.

But Katy Nicholls, the council's licensing manager, said they couldn't do so without advertising the change.

She suggested the council write to taxi drivers asking them to keep to the far end of the rank, which is rarely full.

At Ilfracombe Town Council's monthly meeting on Monday Councillor Geoff Fowler said the current set up at the bus station was causing congestion and was very dangerous.

Councillor Philip Webb also said that bus firm National Express, which had traditionally used the bus station to drop off and collect passengers, was currently stopping outside Crang's on Broad Street.

Mr Webb said this was also very dangerous.
