A planning application for a Tesco Express store on Barnstaple High Street has been submitted to North Devon Council and the store could open in April.

In November the Journal reported how Tesco planned to open a store in the premises which had just been vacated by electrical retailers Bernard Smith.

And that has now happened, with a planning application validated by the council over the Christmas period.

The submitted plans include designs for illuminated signs on the building, a new shop front and the installation of a cash machine.

Tesco spokesman Melanie Chiswell said: "Now an application is in it's likely to be at least three months before the store's opened, providing it gets planning permission."

If given the go ahead the store will be Tesco's third branch in Barnstaple and the sixth in North Devon. There are also stores in Braunton, Bideford and Ilfracombe.

Public consultation on the matter is currently taking place and ends on January 24. To make a comment on the application visit tinyurl.com/aeohwnr. The application numbers are 55071, 55072 and 55073.

The plans were registered with North Devon Council on December 19 and will undergo a period of public consultation which ends on January 24.

“The only way to get real competition for customers is to allow Asda and/or Morrisons to open in the town. What competition is there between Tesco, Tesco and now another Tesco in the town? because when Tesco express opens the first shop to shut down will be the Co op what competition is that. I know of one Fremington Councillor who intended to vote against Asda's
planning application because he felt that other shops in the Town would be killed off but then decides to hold pub nights in our Village Hall which could spell the end of the New Inn Public House. Tell about the pot calling the kettle black”

    ever they like.”

“Sue200 - the reason why the Co-op in Ilfracombe closed down was because it was losing massive amounts of money, and ended up costing the company several million pounds. If it was simply a case of the monopolies commision demanding that one was closed down, they'd have got rid of the High Street store without batting an eyelid. Lidl's have made a success of the same premesis because they operate on massively lower running costs.”

“And we need another Tesco store because .....................?
" 2 big Tesco in Barnstaple, 1 in Ilfracombe, 1 in Braunton. It was my understanding that the big Co-op in Ilfracombe closed down because the monopolies commission said that with that one and the one in the High Street there was unfair competition. Is that true? If it was then how can Tesco be allowed a third store and Asda and Morrisons be refused?”

“why do people always think tesco is cheaper? veg from the pannier market, fish from passmores, meat from grattons, will all be cheaper, it will be local (supporting local jobs and economy) and it will be better quality.

keep the money in devon, rather than mindlessly pouring it into the pockets of tax avoiding ****** like tescos.”

“But Asda and Morrisons are told they are not allowed to build stores in the town, too much competition for Tesco's??
Tesco already have two stores in the town, why do we need a third?”
