PLANS for a new Tesco Express on Barnstaple High Street have been approved by North Devon Council.

The plans, which will see the retail giant knock through two High Street properties, were approved last week after being submitted a week before Christmas.

Barnstaple Town Council recommended the plans be refused by North Devon Council, on grounds the shop front would be out of keeping with the rest of the High Street, and because of its fears there would be a loss of "individual shop frontage".

Two members of the public wrote to the council to object to the plans.

However, North Devon Council approved the plans and work can begin immediately.

Tesco now has three years in which to start work at 100 and 101 High Street.

The plans give the retailer permission to knock through the two shops, install a new shop front and a cash machine.
