Threat of Norovirus closes wards at North Devon District Hospital
The threat of Norovirus at North Devon District Hospital has seen the closure of two wards and also part of a third ward to new admissions and visitors this week.
The Northern Devon Healthcare Trust confirmed a six bed unit in the on Capener Ward is still closed due to extra infection control to prevent a Norovirus outbreak.

Jim Bray, a spokesman from the trust, confirmed a few patients have shown symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting recently but that there have been no confirmed cases of Norovirus at NDDH since November 2012.
He added: "A six-bedded bay on Capener Ward is temporarily closed to admissions for this reason but the rest of Capener Ward is open to admissions as usual.

"Staples and Glossop wards were temporarily closed to admissions earlier this week but no Norovirus infection was identified.
"Both wards were cleaned and are now open as usual.
"This winter North Devon has not been affected by Norovirus as much as many other areas."
The Trust asks hospital visitors to help the situation by staying away if they have experienced diarrhoea and/or vomiting in the previous 48 hours, or been in contact with anyone who has had similar symptoms.

“Norovirus is rapidly inactivated by either sufficient heating or by chlorine-based disinfectants, but the virus is less susceptible to alcohols and detergents, as it does not have a lipid envelope.
SO IF YOU HAVE THE BUG, USE BLEACH TO HELP STOP IT SPREADING :)”

“My wife is frequently an 'in patient' in the North Devon District Hospital and when visiting I use the hand disinfectant religiously on entering and leaving the ward.I have seen many visitors totally ignoring the signs asking them to use the hand cleanser and often see you using it and still do not use it.What is the matter with some people surely they must realise that this is a safety measure put in place to safeguard not only the people they are visiting but themselves as well.Trevor Ley,Lynton.”
