KEITH and Francis sold their business in Hatherleigh, the Cornucopia Delicatessen, which they had run for a number of years, and left the town last week, hopefully for a life less governed by shop hours and the demands of cooking.

Their business has been bought by Sue and Jeff Newman, who have made their new home in Hatherleigh after seven years' living and working in France.

WELCOMING: Sue and Jeff Newman have opened a new business called Café de Ville.

With incredibly hard work, and astonishing speed, they transformed the dramatic red, orange and black colour scheme of the shop's interior, into the pale blue, turquoise and white of the Café de Ville, almost overnight.

A charming dresser filled with pretty plates, a shelf of different coloured teapots, a glass counter at the far end of the spacious shop, filled shelves and a range of tempting and unusual items, have transformed the shop.

The Newmans have created an entirely different atmosphere, no more or less attractive than before, but it is definitely different in a number of ways.

Sue and Jeff are very friendly and welcoming and already full of praise for Hatherleigh, with its great sense of community. They are looking forward to living in a town which has so many clubs and activities to offer.

They feel they can tempt you with a wide range of food and light bites and bigger bites: sandwiches, paninis, pies, jacket potatoes – all with a great choice of fillings and a daily special – hot and delicious on a cold day. And there is a great choice of coffees, teas and soft drinks.

They would really enjoy welcoming young mums popping in before or after the school run – the café is open at 8.30am – and there are two lovely new high chairs provided.

Everyone will receive a warm welcome from these friendly newcomers to Hatherleigh.

The same applies, of course, to Hatherleigh Tea Rooms, just down the road from the newly opened café.

The tea room has been firmly established in Bridge Street for more than five years and offers the chance to sit, chat and enjoy delicious cakes, including caramel shortcake, coffee and walnut, and carrot cake, all home-made by husband and wife team Adrian and Tina Taylor.

Tuesday is their busiest day, when Hatherleigh Market is buzzing, but they are also open on Sundays and every weekday except Wednesday and Thursday, from 11am to 5pm, often providing welcome refreshment for bikers and hikers.

Their food is simple, delicious and beautifully presented in a delightful room with attractive beams, fresh flowers and an instantly welcoming feel. It is the ideal place to sit and chat over a cup of tea, allowing the customers the privacy and intimacy to linger over their food and wide range of hot and cold drinks.

Hatherleigh is fortunate indeed with its places to eat and drink. There are three fantastic pubs, a first class restaurant, The Red Room, and a choice of two very pleasant places – the tearooms and the café – to meet friends and enjoy a great variety of first class food and drink and a friendly welcome.
