Traffic lights fail for second time at busy Barnstaple roundabout
Traffic lights which failed at a busy Barnstaple roundabout yesterday causing traffic chaos have stopped working again for the second time in less than 24 hours.
A traffic light failure at ‘Barnhenge’ roundabout yesterday caused traffic mayhem as cars backed up Sticklepath Hill, over the downstream bridge and back to the A39 as commuters queued to cross the roundabout.

The lights were out of action for the majority of the day, but it was confirmed they were fixed and working again by 5pm.
However, the lights failed again this morning causing further disruption for commuters.

Hugh Griffiths, Highway Operations Control Centre Manager for Devon County Council, posted a message on Twitter just before 9am alerting motorists to the failure.
He said: “Barnstaple, traffic lights Square- all out again this morning. Engineer on his way.”
Queues were made worse by extra traffic caused by pupils returning to school after the summer holidays, as well as students heading back to Petroc, at the top of Sticklepath Hill.
At 2.25pm, Mr Griffiths confirmed the lights were back on and working again.

“Well that comment has just gone to prove that with either amber or no lights at all some drivers are 'b' useless as they have had a crash there this lunchtime. Should have stuck to making ALL your comments in South Devon methinks, you've gone and put the mockers in North Devon. :)))))”
