Police also said the death is not being treated as suspicious but the circumstances surrounding it are under investigation.

Bradworthy Football Club manager Steve Jenkins says Matt will be sadly missed.

"Matt started off his days with us as a youngster coming along to training," he said. "He's had several clubs since then but has been back with us for two seasons and he's probably one of the best keepers to have come out of the area.

"Things started to get on top of him these last few months, but there was nobody better around and he will be missed. It's hard for the guys he's left behind."

The news was first broken by the North Devon Football League on Twitter and by Bradworthy FC on Facebook.

The club posted on its Facebook page: "Very sad news at the loss of our 1st team keeper Matt Oke. RIP Yogi. "

And the North Devon Football League tweeted: "Bradworthy FC have announced the very sad news on the loss of their 1st team keeper Matt Oke. Condolences to his family and friends, RIP."
