One man, believed to be in his sixties, sustained a head injury in the crash and was taken to North Devon District Hospital by ambulance for further treatment.

Fire crews from Barnstaple and Braunton attended and cut the door off one of the vehicles to free a woman who was suffering from back pain. She was placed on a spinal board and put in a stiff neck collar as is procedure in the case of back injuries.

Officers closed Braunton Road to traffic heading in the direction of Barnstaple for just over two hours while crews dealt with the collision and the vehicles were recovered.

The Barnstaple to Braunton carriageway remained open, although traffic queues were heavy in the area.

Shortly after the crash, @rdbates wrote on Twitter: "Big accident just happened on Chivenor roundabout on side as if heading to Barnstaple - only just happened so avoid main road."

At 6.15pm @barberella886 posted: "Fire crews, ambulance and police still on the scene. Traffic heading towards barnstaple still not allowed passage, take alternative routes."

The road was reopened at 7.06pm.

Jess Pearce, who’s one-month old Seat Ibiza was involved in the collision, thanked emergency services for arriving at the scene within minutes of the crash.
