Detective Inspector Praveen Naidoo of Barnstaple CID said: "It appears the man presented a hand gun during the incident and we are treating this as an armed robbery.

"The man, who was wearing distinctive clothing, fled the scene at a busy time of day so someone must have seen him.

"It is also likely that he will be known locally and will have spoken to a friend or partner about what he has done.

"The incident was particularly upsetting and distressing for the female shop assistant and we are looking for a quick resolution.

"We consider this man to be armed and potentially dangerous and would not encourage anyone to approach him if they recognise him.

"If anyone sees him they must call 999 straight away."

Anyone with any further information is asked to contact police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting crime reference CB/12/3877
