UPDATE: Psychiatric patient refuses to come down from roof at North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple
A patient at North Devon District Hospital who climbed onto the roof and refused to come down for over eleven hours has returned to safety.
The police were called to the hospital at 4.18am after the 37-year-old man, who is a psychiatric patient, climbed onto the roof of the single storey 8ft high building.

The fire service were alerted at 5am and two fire engines from Barnstaple attended to provide ladder assistance. However, the man refused to move and as they were unable to help further, they left after an hour.
It is not clear why the man climbed onto the roof but police confirmed he made no threats to his life or anybody else’s.

The situation was resolved at 3.30pm after the man decided to return to safety. He has now returned to the care of hospital staff. Police confirmed he had been admitted to hospital a few days ago.
Peter Leggatt, from Devon Partnership NHS Trust who run psychiatric units across the county, confirmed the hospital cooperated with the emergency services to resolve the situation.
Access to the hospital was unaffected for patients, staff and members of the public.
