STAFF at a Barnstaple supermarket have been celebrating Christmas Gangnam Style – by filming their own version of the smash Korean pop video.

Gangnam Style became a global phenomenon this year, after the video of the song by Korean rapper Psy went viral.

A week ago it became the most viewed video on YouTube with 808 million views, surpassing the previous record holder – the video for teen heart throb Justin Bieber’s hit song Baby.

The Gangnam Style video, with its distinctive dance moves, has inspired a host of parodies and remakes by fans which in turn inspired Tesco staff to make their own version of the song as part of the company’s Fun At Work scheme.

Staff at Tesco’s Rose Lane branch have put a Christmas twist on their performance and replicated Santa Style, a Christmas themed version of the song created by comedians from New York.

Staff member Ryan Martin, 28, filmed the video after being asked to help out.

He said: “I was asked to shoot it and went on the search for a suitable crimbo song. I had a look around online and found Santa Style, a Christmas version of Gangnam Style.”

After getting permission to use the song, Ryan leapt into action.

“On a break we drew up a storyboard,” he said, “and made a shooting list after watching the original video over and over again.”

Filming began on December 2 and was finished just a week later, on Sunday. After a marathon overnight editing session, Ryan had the video finished by Monday evening.

The video starts with store manager Mike Hart in his office about to lock up the store on Christmas Eve.

But Mike’s plans for a quick getaway are ruined when the store security guard, played by stock control manager Kevin Slade, bursts into the office to say the roof alarm has been triggered.

And after investigating he finds Father Christmas, played by Russell Gregg, on the roof.

A chase ensues with dozens of Tesco staff members joining in and performing the trademark Gangnam Style dance.

With filming finishing on Sunday evening, Ryan and Kevin then faced a race against time to get the video finished.

“I was up all night editing the video and Kevin was up until 2.30am doing the special effects,” said Ryan.

“Then on Monday morning, my day off, I had to go in at 8am to get the last scene off Kevin and finish editing for it all to be sent off.”

The video has been entered in a competition with a couple of other Tesco stores, including the stores in Weston-super-Mare and Minehead.

But the hard work has all been worth it said Ryan. “I’ve had so many people come up to me and congratulate me and ask for copies. The response has been really good.”
