Western Morning News

Parts of the Westcountry were waking up to a covering of crisp white snow this morning after the weather took a turn back towards winter.

The Met Office yesterday upgraded parts of the region from a yellow to an amber alert as it was reported parts of Devon and Somerset were experiencing heavy snowfall.

Forecaster Steven Keates said the outlook was for a very chilly day as snow was accompanied by a bitter north-easterly wind.

"All eyes will be looking towards the south as a band of wet weather turns into snow," he said. "As a result, a good part of the South West could see some snow."

Mr Keates said the worst of the weather this morning would be over Dartmoor, which could see 10cm of snow. Parts of North Devon will see snow and the high ground between Exeter and Plymouth could witness a fall of up to 7cm.

More westerly towns will also see a scattering of snowfall, said Mr Keates. "There could be a couple of centimetres in Penzance and there may even be a dusting on the Isles of Scilly, which is quite rare for there."

Yesterday, heavy snow was reported as falling around Okehampton, creating difficult driving conditions on the A30. Snow was also falling at Wrangaton, south Dartmoor.

“Brilliant Devon Janner, good question. The answer could be, because it is illogical. Why don't we embrace England and plant a good old English Apple? Better still why don't the local children make something which they feel represents the bay? It could have been a giant tree sculpture, but at least when you drive past it you wouldn't feel like chopping it down, which I do at the moment. A wooden boat would have done. I think visitors to the bay are probably more interested in that horrible hotel or the nearest pub.”

“Snow alert, everyone panic, amber alert!!!

Muppets, a few flakes and once again we realise that the met office have once got it wrong. And funnily enough when they realise that the weather is not as predicted they change the met office website to reflect what is happening from what they predicted.

Using the same logic I could just as easily look out my window and throw up a website that does the same without spending millions of pounds of taxpayers money!!!!”

“I nearly fell over laughing yesterday, my four year old boy saw it and says, "look Daddy a Pineapple, I like Pineapples", if a child recognises it for what it really is, why didn't the Mayor!”

“the question has to asked, why has mayor oliver`s pineapple been uncovered and exposed to the elements, yet torquay seafront stil have their palms covered up,surely the weather is more extreme at the pineapple site, especially since all natural cover has been decimated for miles around, thus allowing cold blasts to hurt that expensive plant!!”
