WALES under-17 international Danny Barrow does not have too far to look for inspiration.

As a left-footed Welshman, the Braunton teenager is inspired by Ryan Giggs and Gareth Bale.

The Plymouth Argyle prospect, 15, said: "Gareth Bale is the player I look up to mostly because he's Welsh, he's a really good player and I'm left-footed as well.

"He can defend, he can attack, he can finish and he can cross a ball. He's got everything you want from a footballer."

The ability to adapt between attack and defence is something Barrow is learning. At Argyle he is regarded as a forward and only last year, when called up to Wales Under-17s at the age of 14, was he asked to play in defence.

"I'll play anywhere and I'll always give 110 per cent for my country," he said.

"I was a left winger and I had never played left back in my life.

"Against Belgium I played a whole game against a right winger who was outstanding.

"It's a really hard position because you have got to concentrate on the man and the ball all the time."

Despite being much younger than his team-mates, Barrow took the transition to international football in his stride.

In October he went on as a substitute to help Wales win 4-0 against England at Haverfordwest in the home international tournament, the Victory Shield.

It was the biggest win Wales Under-16s had recorded against their neighbours and the match was shown live on Sky Sports.

No wonder Barrow enjoyed some banter with his mates when he returned to school in Braunton.

"It was probably one of the best moments of my life, especially because it was in my home town as well," he said.

"Throughout the years England have smashed us in the Victory Shield.

"It was awesome to come back and tell my mates 'we beat you'.

"It was a bit weird because it was only a couple of years before that I was playing with my mates in the park."

Another trip to Wales is due soon when Barrow will officially be presented with his Wales cap.

"We don't know who is handing out the caps yet but it will be someone pretty decent, maybe Ryan Giggs or Ian Rush," he said.

At the weekend, Barrow was due back in Wales to play for Plymouth Argyle Under-16s at Swansea City.

Having come through Argyle's development centre at Chivenor, he now trains up to three times a week at Home Park.

As a member of the Pilgrims' centre of excellence, he hopes to continue making progress for club and country.

"The last couple of years have gone past really quickly," he said.

"And Plymouth have been really supportive when it comes to internationals."
