Young People in North Devon make driftwood Christmas gifts
A NEW scheme teaching young people key enterprising skills is getting a helping hand from an unusual source - driftwood.
Aptly named Driftwood Enterprise, the project seeks to provide youngsters at the Ayres Close support accommodation in Bideford with an opportunity to create a range of products from scratch.
Led by Bideford charity ‘Wings South West’, those involved are then given the opportunity to follow their driftwood creations through the sales process.
James Lewis, programme manager at Wings South West, said the project hopes to provide the young people with the valuable practical, business, marketing and sales skills needed to get a job.

“The primary aim of the Driftwood Enterprise is to engage as many unemployed young people as possible, to boost their self-esteem and give them valuable skills and experience,” he said.
“This will more closely simulate them with the world of work and the responsibilities and rewards that come with it.”
Sarah Vaughan, Independent Futures Team Manager at Ayres Close, said the project will help to increase the aspirations of those involved.
“We aim to enable young people to connect themselves to opportunities that identify, develop and promote their talents and achieve their future goals.”
The project is planned to continue into the New Year with young people creating other products such as mirrors, clocks and planters.
