Adrian also landed specimen mullet of 5lb 5oz and 4lb 7½oz. All fish succumbed to float fished bread flake.
Triple Hook Club member Julian Stainer fished a local shore mark to tempt a fine bass of 10lb 1oz using peeler crab.
September and October are generally fine months for big bass, which can be tempted using generous helpings of crab or large fish baits.
When fishing rocky ground after dark it is wise to use a heavy trace as large conger are often on the prowl.
Kevin Legge had just this experience while I fished with him a few nights ago, when a conger picked up his spider crab offering. After a spirited struggle Kevin landed a conger of 19lb, a fish he certainly wouldn't have landed without an 80lb b.s hook length.
The latest North Devon League match saw a variety of species brought to the scales. Tony Gussin of Barnstaple Rod 'N' Reelers took top spot with a bass of 7lb 13½oz. Second was Michael Squires of Bideford Sole Brothers with a small-eyed ray of 7lb 11¼oz. Third for Rod 'N' Reelers was Andy Joslin with a small-eyed ray of 7lb 10¼oz.
Triple Hook Club's Junior Open saw Andrew Luxton secure top spot with a flounder scaling 15¾oz. Mary Anne Luxton won the Ladies Open with a flounder of 15¾oz, and runner-up was Joan Cairns with a flounder of 15¼oz.
The Taw salmon and sea trout season has now come to an end with good numbers of grilse present. Ron Warwick finished his season with a fresh 6lb sea-liced grilse.
The Torridge has gone quiet with the recent sunny days and cool evenings. Despite this Steve Phelps landed a salmon of about 7lb from the Lower River and Andy Wadham a sea trout of about 5lb.
It has been a good season on the Torridge, with more than 100 salmon so far. The Torridge has a two-week extension to its season — for details and a special permit call Charles Innis on 01409 231237.
Ilfracombe Match Group visited Highampton Lakes, where John Lisle secured victory with a net of carp totalling 51lb 1oz. Kevin Shears took second place with 37lb 1oz of carp. Graham Kernow's 30lb 6oz of carp gave him third. Dennis Chaplin took the silver fish bag with 14oz.
Stafford Moor Fishery continues to be the area's most prolific match fishery, with ton-up hauls a regular feature. The recent So Simple Pairs weekend match attracted 84 anglers, with Perry Stone winning day one of the event with 203lb 2oz. Dave Walsgrove won day two with 150lb 4oz. Viaduct fisheries pairing Ray Hayward and Martin Preston won the pair's title and £600.
Stafford Moors midweek Fish 'n' Chip Match saw a field of 46 anglers headed by Steve Shaw, who put together a bag of 30 carp to 8lb, totalling 151lb 10oz.
Bideford Angling Club's latest Coarse Match was held at Tamar Lakes where John Lisle secured victory with 36lb. Runner-up was Nielson Jeffery with 26lb 9oz and third Andy Gray with 24lb 12oz.
The Northern Devon branch of the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary Fly Fishing Club fished their Open Fly Fishing Competition at Wimbleball in near perfect weather.
The 11 police officers caught 46 trout. Retired officer John Methven took the winning bag of seven fish, totalling 10lb 14oz. Dick Yarnold took second with four trout for 10lb 2oz, which included a fine rainbow of 4lb 9oz. Third place was won by Paul Tyzack with five fish totalling 8lb. Summerland's Tackle Shop of Westward Ho! sponsored the competition.
I was saddened to hear of a very large commercial haul of bass off the coast totalling several stone. Catches like this decimate stocks of a valuable sporting commodity that many anglers attempt to preserve by carefully returning most of what they catch. Surely it is time for a minimum one-mile exclusion zone off our shoreline to protect fish stocks?
