Bumper turnout for North Devon Cross Country League

Thursday, October 09, 2008, 07:00

THE SECOND event of the North Devon cross country season attracted another huge field on Sunday.

More than 350 athletes of all ages and abilities enjoyed the Gliddon and Squire League meeting at West Buckland School.

Organiser Jan Witheridge said: "We have been particularly pleased that, as well as the usual stalwart supporters of the league, we have a number of new schools and running clubs this year."

St Margaret's, Holywell, Lampard, Caen, Instow and Chelfham have all joined the popular six-race series this season.

Among the age-group winners were host school athletes Alice Hannan, Jess Bennett, Nick Bennett and Daisy Adams.

The most dramatic finish of the day was made by Simon Mathers of Grenville — to the delight of his supporters. He fell and dived across the line to confirm third place in the senior men's race.

St Michael's School in Tawstock host the third meeting of the season on November 9 from 10am.

North Devon Road Runner John Shapland marked his first half marathon for more than four years with a superb time at Burnham-on-Sea. He clocked a personal best of 1-16-55 to finish seventh overall and first in his age group.

Shapland, who is in excellent form, is also leading his age group in the Somerset Series with three races to go.

After taking fifth in the Ash Excellent Eight and fourth in the Mells seven-mile trail race, the Vet50 competitor is on course for a top-four place overall.

Club-mates Alan and Barbara Nicol sampled the atmosphere of last week's historic Berlin Marathon.

While Ethiopian legend Haile Gebrselassie was setting a staggering new world-record time of 2-03-59, the North Devon duo could be proud of their own personal achievements.

Alan set a new personal best of 3-29-45 and Barbara completed the course in 3-44-53.

Bideford AAC's Martin Colwill took 19th place among 436 runners with a time of 37-12 at the Newquay 10k.

North Devon AC made a strong start to the new Devon Sportshall League season at Dawlish.

Four new club records and a host of PBs were set as the team took third place overall.

The balance test brought the best out of Liam Bartlett and Mollie Roach, who both set club records, while Craig Pike recorded North Devon's record score in the under-15s vertical jump.

In the under-15 girls category, Rebbeca Phillips broke the four-lap record and equalled the previous best time over two laps.
