Gallienne's pace fades but not his enthusiasm as he goes off the track
Thursday, September 18, 2008, 07:00
AFTER a summer of middle-distance track races, Steve Gallienne has been bursting to get stuck into the longer distance events.
On Sunday, the Bideford Blues athlete wasn't in the mood to hang around when he was finally unleashed at Torrington AAC's Back-in-Five.
Gallienne went through the first mile in 4-39 as he looked to make a statement of intent for the forthcoming cross country season.
Although he paid for the early pace with an uncomfortable second half, the teenager held on to retain his title over the undulating five-mile road race.
"All that track stuff made me too enthusiastic," said Gallienne after seeing his early lead cut away.
"I'm well happy to hold on and win but it's a shame about the time (27-52). I probably had a lead of about a minute, but at the end it was 14 seconds — I just faded after about two miles."
Closing all the time was club-mate Wayne Stephens, who took second spot after pulling away from third-placed Pete Monaghan on the first hill.
Bideford's Catherine Newman marked her return from a hamstring injury with a dominant victory in the women's race.
Competing for the first time since the Plymouth Half Marathon in May, she finished in 31-52.
"I'm not training as much as I would like, so I was really pleased with it," she said.
"I've had to cut down on the miles and I do a lot of cross training, but hopefully this shows it's getting better.
"I love racing, so it's good to be back doing something."
It wasn't all plain sailing for the Torrington-based athlete though — she cut her hand on a car wing mirror over the final stretch.
The race, which raised money for the North Devon Hospice, also saw home athlete Oliver Cornish pick up the prize for first junior.
● More than 400 runners turned out for the first meeting of the Gliddon and Squire North Devon Cross Country League on Sunday.
Event organiser Jan Witheridge was delighted to see a record field making the most of the sunny conditions at Grenville College. "After the summer we've had, I was amazed it was almost too hot for running," she said.
"The enthusiasm of the runners was a pleasure to watch and Andy Lane, the race manager, did an excellent job of keeping the races, several of which had more than 80 starters, running like clockwork."
The next round is at West Buckland on October 5 — to find out more contact Jan at jmw@westbuckland.devon.sch.uk.
● Bideford AAC's Mark Jenkin set a new personal best of 1-09-00 to finish eighth in Sunday's Bristol Half Marathon. Team-mate Kevin Heywood was among the early leading pack but dropped out after eight miles, feeling unwell.
● North Devon Road Runners host the Denes Doone Run on Sunday from noon.
The race, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, tests athletes over 10 multi-terrain miles around Lynton and Lynmouth.
