Women farmers are calling for a ban on Chinese lanterns and are warning of their dangers on Bonfire Night.

The Women's Food & Farming Union (WFU) has joined the clamour from other farming organisations for a ban and has welcomed Government guidelines urging the public to think twice before using them.

  1. Chinese lanterns

It said the lanterns could threaten the health and wellbeing of livestock, cause fire damage, and create hazards to aircraft, shipping and the Coastguard. The WFU's Helen Bower said: "Chinese lanterns may look pretty in the sky, but the devastation they can cause is untold.

"We are extremely grateful to the Agriculture Minister, David Heath, for launching an inquiry into Chinese lanterns and we hope that in the very near future they will be banned. We hope everyone's Bonfire Night celebrations are a great success, but urge them to consider the consequences of using Chinese lanterns, both now and in the future."

“"I'd be interested in hearing from anybody who has managed to set fire to anything with a conker."

I set fire to one once. We as kids used to bake the conker in an oven to make it 'unbeatable'. My mother wasn't too pleased when she returned home to see the mess!

Incidentally, I would like to know how many kids were blinded by playing conkers, before the PC brigade made sure kids were issued with goggles?”

“@Keith_C I'm sure that your childhood development wasn't in anyway changed by the fact no one told you to stop doing things??? did someone tell you to not play conkers because of the mess it leaves in the street? and its exactly the same as making a lantern and watching it fly you string your conker and then smash it!!! its the same!!!!! and by the way the wire frames are not a danger to birdlife for 2 reasons: they break down quickly when exposed outside and the fact they have very little wire in them!!!!!!”

“There is something terribly wrong with this country,
people are giving away their freedoms to those who want to feel power over others,
    Why do we do this?
why Don't we address the real issue, that everyone needs to accept their own responsibilities; you pay or get paid for the things you do in life if you break it you bought it, if we addressed this issue there wouldn't be people trying to ban everything. oh and if you want to ban something as benign as paper lanterns why not yoyo's, walking in the countryside, picnics, visiting the beach???!!!”

“OK fair enough, everybody has their own opinion. All I'm saying is why ban something that brings people of all ages together each year when you could buy a make it yourself pack (creativity) from a shop which is both safe and environmentally friendly? What would be such a huge problem about that?”
