Last month the Journal launched an appeal on thisisnorthdevon.co.uk to find the best cream tea in North Devon.

Visitors to the website have been sending in their recommendations which are so far showing Orford Mill at Torrington as the favourite.

Pam Ley voted for Chambercombe Manor in Ilfracombe.

She said: "The tea is superb, we have had to admit defeat on the 'Lady Jane' size, and just have the 'Serving Wench', which the men love to order!

"Best of all for delicious, home made, really fresh scones, HUGE amount of cream, and jam and some special extras.

"On top of this the surroundings are idyllic."

Max Cooper voted for Orford Mill.

"For a small price of £5 the cream teas are exquisite. The cream is to die for and the scones are packed with flavour. Once I tried one I had them every day. Highly recommended."

Ana Youngman also voted for Orford Mill.

"Delicious scones, cream, jam and tea. In beautiful surroundings which I feel adds to the flavour!"

Orford Mill was also voted the best by Laura Ward. "Because its great value, the surroundings are lovely and the cream tea itself is really nice."

Another vote for Orford Mill came in from Heather Ward. "It's lovely to sit by the river and relax in the peaceful surroundings whilst having a well priced and very nice cream tea."

But Jeanne Clarke said the best cream tea was at Cheristow Lavender Farm at Hartland.

"Scrumptious huge scones handbaked by the owners served with their own wonderful preserves, some containing lavender. Above all there is a great welcome and attention to detail."

Another vote for Orford Mill from Caroline Stone who said it was "memorably mouth-meltingly delicious..."

And Kerry Simpson also voted for Orford Mill.

"These cream teas are absolutely delicious and since Richard and Angela Cooper have started doing them in the grounds of Orford Mill, Torrington I have had a cream tea almost every weekend since they started in April.

"I have introduced them to my friends and work colleagues and they now have one at every opportunity.

"The scones are warm and a good size and made by Richard himself, the jam is locally sourced and the cream is 'Definitely Devon' .

"This cream tea is very good value for money whether you have one or two scones, a pot of tea or a pot of coffee, as there is always more than enough provided to have at least three cups of tea with your scones and oodles of jam and cream to dollop on the warm scone.

"The picturesque setting is just wonderful for lazy afternoon tea beside the River Torridge with peacocks wandering around the lawns. "Hence the reason I had two cream teas last weekend, one with a friend and one with my partner the following day. Hoping to have another one this weekend , weather permitting."

Jayne Harden said, "one visit is never enough" at Orford Mill.

But Carl said the Thatch Barn Inn at Croyde was the best because "it had generous portions of awsome clotted cream and jam and presentation is amazing! "Definitely the best I've found in the area!"

Jackie Milne-Redhead voted for Tor Down Farm.

She said: "The owners of the farm are very friendly.

"Once you have gone along lovely country lanes to Tor Down you walk down into their court yard and into what would be their own dining room, if it were not a tea room.

"Most places now are about £4.50 for two scones, jam cream and cup of tea, but on top of this there are fairy cakes, Victoria sponge and a big pot of tea — not just a cup. "Last year was £3 if I recall correctly. Haven't been this year yet, but what value and good friendly service.

"They also have a nature trail walk, to work up an appetite or to burn off the calories after your cream tea. Kids love it, so you feel nice and relaxed out in the country instead of a small tea room been pushed and rushed for the next people to sit down.

"It's an altogether pleasant experience in North Devon."

Tina Rycroft voted for Badger Coombe at Twitchen, North Molton.

She said: "This is one of the best cream teas I have had. Masses amounts of glorious yellow clotted cream, freshly baked scones, crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle - perfection. Home made strawberry jam, and soft, light sponge cake. Served with a lovey cup of tea (choice of normal tea or Earl Grey) in a bone china teapot and qauint bone china cups and saucers. All this served in one of the most idyllic surroundings possible."

Janet Clifton voted for The Corn Dolly in South Molton.

She said: "A very quaint cafe, friendly staff and a huge scone! A top up of tea or coffee if wanted."

Diana Heard voted for Hartland Farm and Tea Shop. She particularly liked the "delicious home made scones and home made jam, the friendly service and the warm welcome".
