But instead of paying up the the 26-year-old tried to evade his fine — claiming the car in the photograph was a clone or copy of his vehicle.
Kirton, from Braunton, changed his number plate by rearranging the letters and numbers, He also removed the mud flaps.
He then sent letters with photos of the altered car to support his false claim that it wasn't him.
Kirton admitted perverting the course of justice and was sentenced to eight months in jail, suspended for two years.
He was also ordered by a judge at Plymouth Crown Court to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work and pay a £600 fine.
Natalie Hatswell, from the Devon and Cornwall Safety Camera Partnership, said: "If it was just an ordinary jumping of a red light, which I believe it was in his case, it would have been three penalty points and a £60 fine."
Judge Francis Gilbert QC said it was an extremely stupid attempt to avoid the three points and fine.
