North Devon Journal Business Awards
The inaugural North Devon Journal Business Awards aim to showcase all that is positive and strong about the North Devon economy across a wide range of categories.
We are aiming for the awards to be THE annual event for the business community in the region, recognising and rewarding the businesses and individuals who have achieved exceptional results despite the testing economic climate culminating in a gala presentation evening at the Barnstaple Hotel on Thursday, October 13, 2011.

Open to businesses in the Torridge, North Devon and Exmoor National Park areas only.
- Innovation of the Year
Judges will be looking for an innovative product development, business initiative or marketing idea which has created a completely new market, radically improved business processes or elevated a business to a leader in its field. - Environmental Award
Judges will be looking for evidence of a company’s ‘green’ credentials. This could include steps taken to reduce negative environmental impact or the development of products or services which have a positive impact on the environment. - Excellence in Customer Service Award
Judges will be looking for evidence of businesses which always go that extra mile and this will be demonstrated through outstanding pre-sales advice, efficient delivery of products and services, attentive after-care and effective management of problems to customers’ satisfaction. - Best Tourism/Hospitality Business Award
Judges will be looking for outstanding customer service, business growth and innovation from a business or individual serving the tourism/hospitality sector. - Young Entrepreneur of the Year
Entries for this category will be limited to those aged 30 or under on October 1st, 2011. Judges will be looking for an individual who has displayed outstanding business acumen, either through developing, growing and marketing a particular product or service of their own, or through playing a key role in a larger organisation’s development. - Online Business of the Year
Judges will be looking for an outstanding business which derives most of its income from web-based activity or uses the internet effectively, including the use of social media, to promote, sell, manage or deliver its products and services. - Employee of the Year
This category must be nominated by an individual’s line manager. Judges will be looking for an individual who plays an outstanding part in their organisation. Evidence will need to be provided of commitment, loyalty, success and innovation among other qualities. - Boss of the Year
This category must be nominated by an individual working for or reporting to a manager, director or owner. Judges will be looking for a caring, empathetic, popular line manager, who communicates well, enables staff to perform well and provides inspirational leadership. - Apprentice of the Year
Judges will be looking for an individual on the Apprenticeship Scheme who plays an outstanding part in their organisation. Evidence will need to be provided of commitment, loyalty, success in personal development and innovation, among other qualities. - Family Business of the Year Award
Open to businesses which are primarily run by members of the same family, judges will be looking for outstanding customer service, employee relations, business growth and innovation from this business. - Small Business of the Year Award (up to 25 employees)
Judges will be looking for outstanding customer service and employee relations together with business growth and innovation from this business. - Medium/Large Business of the Year (Over 25 employees)
Judges will be looking for outstanding customer service and employee relations together with business growth and innovation from this business.
Note: The three winners in categories 10, 11 and 12 will then be judged for the overall North Devon Business of the Year Award.
