07:00 - 13-November-2008

BIDEFORD Town Band played happy birthday for Alice Kendall during a special party at the Springfield Day Centre, Bideford, to celebrate her centenary.

She also enjoyed a second party the next day with family and friends at The Joiners Arms, Bideford.

Alice was born at Silford Farm, Northam, which was owned by her grandfather.

She then moved to Cold Harbour, Bideford, with her parents and lived there until she married Edward Kendall.

She met her husband-to-be at the Golden Bay Hotel in Westward Ho! where she was a waitress and he was a wine waiter.

Following their marriage they moved to Plymouth but came back to Bideford in 1933.

Edward started cleaning buses and eventually became a bus conductor.

He was known as 'Mr Argyle' for his passionate support of Plymouth's football team.

They had six children — Gordon, Violet, Peter, Clifford, Stanley and Barbara.

Edward died in 1984.

Alice used to attend the old age pensioners club on The Pill and she enjoys the Tuesday coffee mornings at Lavington Church. She lives at home with her sister-in-law Gloria who looks after her.

Alice has 29 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 17 great great grandchildren.
