Voters in North Devon have so far been slow to turn up to vote for their new Police and Crime Commissioner.

Polling stations opened at 7am but some have seen fewer than five people through their doors.

A spokesman from both North Devon and Torridge District councils confirmed the uptake had been quite slow.

However they remained positive that more people would come along to vote throughout the day with stations remaining open until 10pm this evening.

People commenting on the social media site Twitter also suggested that interest in voting was low.

Debbie Manners said: “I voted. But I was only the fifth person through the door at the polling station in two hours.”

Daniel Owen said: “One other voter in my polling station, which for our village counts as quite busy.”

James Hellyer tweeted: “I was the only one at the polling station. No tellers from any party. About 165 people had voted so far. On that measure, turnout is on par with a council by-election!"

41 Police and Crime Commissioners are being elected across England and Wales today.

They will be responsible for holding the police force to account in their area, aiming to cut crime and ensure the police force works effectively.
