Commando Logistic Regiment is the dedicated logistic regiment for 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines and was originally formed in Plymouth in 1971.
It supports the operation on the ground by supplying, transporting and mending equipment, fuel and supplies for the fighting troops. A large part of its work is operating Combat Logistic Patrols, or convoys, ferrying supplies to front line units. It also provides medical support to the brigade.
CLR is made up of several squadrons including Headquarters Squadron, Equipment Support Squadron, Logistic Support Squadron, Medical Squadron and Landing Force Support Party, providing a very wide mix of specialised skills, from drivers to engineers, and metalsmiths to medics.
During its last deployment to Afghanistan in 2006 the regiment shifted 1,000 tons of artillery ammunition, just over three million gallons of fuel, and nearly 5,000 tons of rations and supplies to the Forward Operating Bases and Mobile Operations Groups.
It moved around 1,500 containers of supplies from Kandahar to Helmand and about 4,500 tons of freight by air.
The regiment’s vehicle mechanics kept just over a thousand vehicles running and the medical and hospital staff treated just over a thousand patients and performed over 250 surgical interventions.
