Lions seek planning permission for their new home

Thursday, October 23, 2008, 07:00

THE LION triplets at Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park will soon move into a "very, very safe" new enclosure at the park, if planning permission is granted.

The park has put in a retrospective planning application for a lion enclosure at the park, which will take the place of the old snow leopard pen.

Park spokesman Paul Richards said: "Sadly our snow leopards died last November of old age, within a month of each other, and our three lions Samson, Leo and Lennie need somewhere to live. At the moment they're in the holding pen, but the new enclosure should be finished in early 2009."

Mr Richards added: "We got the cubs at ten months old from Lynton Zoo in Cambridge. Now they're 18 months old and growing fast. The new enclosure is very, very safe, and no expense has been spared. We have big things planned for the area around the enclosure as well."

The planning decision now lies with North Devon Council, who will end their consultation period on November 3.

Mr Richards said: "Let's hope they grant planning permission, or we could end up with three lions wandering around Combe Martin."
