Woman's body found at bottom of cliffs near Lynmouth

Saturday, September 27, 2008, 14:04

THE BODY of a woman was airlifted from the bottom of a cliff near Lee Abbey, Lynmouth, on Friday afternoon.

A rescue helicopter from Chivenor took the body to the North Devon District Hospital where a post-mortem will be carried out.

Inquiries are underway to identify the woman.

Ilfracombe and Lynmouth Coastguard Rescue teams also assisted because the location was inaccessible to police.

A member of the Lynmouth rescue team was winched down the cliff to recover any belongings which might help the police investigation. But nothing was found.

A high tide also complicated the operation.

During the afternoon police were investigating a report of a missing 28-year-old woman visitor to the area when the body was discovered.

Police are now trying to get hold of next of kin to identify the body.
