Originally an award-winning stage musical in Australia, Bad Boy Johnny and the Prophets of Doom was written by Daniel Abineri of Rocky Horror fame. It premiered in Melbourne in 1989 and featured a young Russell Crowe in the title role.
Now, for its 21st birthday, renowned theatre producers, Rockman Music have given the show a new lease of life.
Johnny is a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, dreaming of a better life. Starting out with a stolen guitar, he forms a band, The Prophets of Doom, and is soon discovered by evil priest, Father MacLean.
Booked onto a bizarre X-Factor style show Have Your Say, Johnny is voted by the public as the person the world would like to see as the new pope. All is well in his new, albeit strange, role until plans emerge that he is to be assassinated live on stage by his own manager. Will Johnny make it through the night? This is a fun show, packed with comedy and rock ballads. It already has a great buzz around it and looks set to become a hit on these shores too. Tickets: between £23.50 and £12 with a £10 rate for students. Box office: 01271 324242 or visit www.northdevontheatres.org.
