Three Moors wind farm refusal to go to appeal

Thursday, October 30, 2008, 07:00

A SPOKESMAN for a wind farm company has spoken of his disappointment after plans to build nine 105-metre turbines were rejected by North Devon councillors.

Gerry Burke, of Airtricity Developments UK, was speaking after a North Devon Council planning committee decided against a proposed wind farm at Three Moors, on the edge of Exmoor.

The company had anticipated the decision and launched an appeal before last Wednesday's hearing.

Development manager Mr Burke said: "While we are disappointed by the recommendation of the planning committee not to support this application, we are confident the Three Moors site [north of Knowstone] could play a key role in the development of renewable energy in Devon.

"The site lies within one of the areas identified by Devon County Council as suitable locations for onshore wind developments."

Mr Burke said the company had made comprehensive environmental assessments of the site and consulted thoroughly. He also promised to work with the council and local community throughout the appeal process.

"[This] will be an opportunity for people to hear about the wider benefits that can come from renewable energy," he said.

At last week's hearing, planning officer Alan Barnett recommended refusal. He said the Three Moors site was one of the defining views of North Devon.

He said: "Not withstanding a presumption in favour [of green energy], I do have concerns about the impact on the local area, the landscape and ecology in particular. This should override energy requirements."
