Paul Merton's Silent Clowns Queen's Theatre, Barnstaple Friday May 1

COMEDY icons of the past will be celebrated by TV funnyman Paul Merton (right) at the Queen's Theatre in May.

This will be a rare chance to see classic films on a big screen in a large theatre. The show will celebrate the work of comedy icons including Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, Harold Lloyd and many others.

As a lifelong fan of the silent comedy genre, Paul's infectious enthusiasm and extensive knowledge of the films will no doubt make it a hilarious and informative ride for all, a must for all fans of traditional slapstick comedy.

To add to the experience Paul is accompanied by world-renowned pianist, Neil Brand, whose inventive playing and impeccable timing brings the films to life. Neil has been providing live accompaniment for silent films for more than 25 years, and is considered one of the finest exponents of the art.

To top off the evening Buster Keaton's uproariously funny Steamboat Bill Junior is shown in its entirety.

The comic masterpiece is perhaps most famous for the moment when the side of a building collapses and Buster narrowly misses injury via an open window.

Paul is one of comedy television's most recognisable and respected faces from shows such as Have I Got News For You and Room 101, as well as his documentary series In China and India. He last visited Barnstaple in 2008 performing his Impro Chums show during the North Devon Festival.

Tickets are £14.50 with a concessionary rate available, £9.50 for young people, and £43 for a family of four (two adults, two children). Box office: 01271 324242 or visit www.north devontheatres.org.uk
