The road was immediately closed to allow both of Devon’s air ambulances to land on the carriageway at Gornhay Cross. One of the men was flown to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, while the other was flown to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in Exeter.
The third man was described as “walking wounded”. All three injured men are from Tiverton. Police said they had no further updates on the condition of them at this time.
Police confirmed this afternoon the 43-year-old driver of the van, a man from Saltash, had been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and taken to Heavitree Road Police Station in Exeter.
The A361 was closed in both directions at Bolham roundabout in the aftermath of the crash to allow the scene to be cleared and for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash to be carried out.
The carriageway heading towards the M5 motorway has since reopened although the Barnstaple-bound carriageway remains closed and is expected to do so until this evening.
Local diversions are in place at the scene.
Motorists are advised to approach with care.
