The music and dance of Brittany and central France
Truffetête Plough Arts Centre, Torrington Saturday, August 14, 7.30pm
THE music and dance of Brittany and central France comes to the Plough this Saturday in a fun packed evening with Truffetête.
Whether you're a seasoned dancer, fancy trying something new, or just want to go along and listen, the driving, energetic sounds of this local band promise to get you in the holiday mood.
Although some of the French dances will be for couples — the mazurka or bourrée, for example — there will also be plenty of simple circle dances where no partner is necessary.
Most of the steps are straightforward and easily learned (especially when taught by experienced instructor Jenny Dodwell, a frequent visitor to France). The band has been running monthly dance sessions at Huntshaw since last autumn.
With melodies performed on fiddles, melodeon and whistles plus accompaniments on guitar, cello, percussion and bouzouki, the band bring a unique English twist to traditional French dance music.
Joining the musicians, many who are local to Torrington, will be fiddle player Becki Driscoll.
This family-friendly event starts with an hour long introductory workshop at 7.30pm to learn or practice steps. The main 'bal' starts at 8.30pm. An optional French meal is available from The Plough Café — pre-booking essential.
