A BARNSTAPLE businessman is preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime fundraising trip in memory of his "darling daughter" Elizabeth.

Herbert Malek, 71, owner of the Wimpy restaurant in Barnstaple's High Street, will travel more than 1,300 miles across Southern India on a vintage Royal Enfield Bullet motorbike next month.

Herbert, who will fly to India on Wednesday, January 20, hopes to raise around £5,000 for North Devon Hospice.

He said: "My wife Pat and I lost our darling daughter Elizabeth to breast cancer nearly five years ago.

"During her last few weeks, she received considerable comfort from the North Devon Hospice for which we are eternally grateful.

"I am looking for as much support and sponsorship as possible for the hospice because they provide such essential services for local people."

The trip starts in Goa and finishes in the city of Kottayam — taking in the Ghat mountain range and Kudremukh National Park en route.

Herbert, who can often be seen riding his Harley-Davidson around Barnstaple, says he cannot wait to embark on the two-week trip.

He said: "It will be an incredible experience. My friends think I'm mad for signing up for the challenge at my age but I'm determined to complete it.

"I've been in business in Barnstaple for more than 25 years and have written letters to all my business contacts asking for sponsorship."

Herbert, a long serving member of Barnstaple Rotary Club, has already kick-started his fundraising efforts with a £1,000 donation from the club.

Gerard Fawcitt, of North Devon Hospice's fundraising team, added: "We are grateful to Herbert and all his supporters. We wish him the best of luck on his challenge and would like to thank him for all he is doing for the hospice."
