"The Hoff" is filming in North Devon

Former Baywatch star David Hasselhoff has hit the beaches of North Devon.

The TV legend and pop icon, known as The Hoff, is filming a new programme in Britain.

He was due to meet with Appledore RNLI crew members and lifeguards in Woolacombe this morning — but cancelled at the last minute.

The show is being produced by Living TV which had approached the RNLI team and local lifeguards.

A spokesman for Appledore RNLI said: "David Hasselhoff was to make a programme showing how the RNLI lifeguards and lifeboat service cooperate to enhance the safety of both beach and sea users.

"The idea was that he would interview the Woolacombe lifeguards first, see what their role was, and then be taken by a chartered rib to the all weather lifeboat, to see how the lifeboat service operated.

"The Appledore all weather lifeboat was almost at Baggy Point when a phone call from the TV producers came through saying that unfortunately Hasselhoff's schedule was too tight and the filming was therefore cancelled.

"It was such a shame that the voluntary lifeboat crew, including the shore helpers, had taken time off from work and holidays to help out, and given no warning of the cancellation until they were on their way."

Nigel Taylor, from Think Design Partnership in Croyde, said he spotted The Hoff at a market stall outside the village hall in Croyde at 4.15pm today. He said: "Maybe he was shopping for holiday presents!"
