BRITAIN'S Got Talent finalists Flava led the festivities at this year's Holsworthy Community Fun Day.

Hundreds of people turned out to support the event, now in its second year, at Holsworthy Community College.

The fun day is hosted by a number of different agencies to showcase all that is available in the local area while also providing entertainment and activities.

Superintendent Kevin Harris, North Devon local policing area commander, said: "It is wonderful. I have spoken to so many different agencies who have put their time into improving communities - making people feel healthier and safer - and who have demonstrated a community spirit. It's a wonderful place."

The range of events and activities included everything from bushcraft skills and laser games to displays, presentations and games which all culminated in a performance by dance crew Flava together with 100 children from the Holsworthy learning community.

Deputy head teacher of Holsworthy Community College, Mark Foster, said: "It's been so busy with a great turnout. The buzz here for me is seeing what Flava have done – all the young people involved in a really energetic way.

"It's been a really active evening and attracted a huge range of people from the community. It's all really positive."

Principal, David Fitzsimmons, added: "I'm really pleased to build on the success of last year and hope it will become an annual event as it is a real community celebration."

Mayor Liz Squire said: "It is just an amazing event. This is the second year but my first and I am extremely impressed.

"To see such a variety of people is great as is the commitment of people here for the young people – it is amazing.

"Once again Holsworthy is being put on the map."

Portreeve Russell Dymond said: "To me the fun day is important because it is a way of presenting the Court Leet and the Portreeve.

"And it is important for the town because it gives townspeople the chance to see what happens in the area. It is quite an excellent event."

Lesley Browne from Devon and Cornwall Housing said: "We are here to help promote the agencies in the area to residents in a fun and interactive way. They can get together and engage with one another.

"It is good to get Flava, who are very well known, here. One hundred children taking part in the experience is a great opportunity for them and really great for the community to have them here."

This year's event was sponsored by Devon and Cornwall Housing Association, Devon and Cornwall Police, Tarka Housing, Devon County Council, Holsworthy Rotary Club, Holsworthy Town Council and Waitrose. Thanks were also given to Holsworthy Community College and Holsworthy Scouts.
