MP questions Chivenor cuts

Tuesday, December 01, 2009, 10:50

NORTH Devon MP Nick Harvey has tabled parliamentary questions over possible cuts to the Chivenor search and rescue operation.

He said today: "I have tabled Parliamentary Questions to the Defence Minister about the possible cuts to the search and rescue service at RMB Chivenor.

"I have asked him how many call outs each SAR station attended over each of the past 10 years, broken down by type of callout and indicating in each case how many were at night time – this will give a better understanding of just how valuable Chivenor's 24 hour cover is.

"I am also demanding to know when he expects to conclude the negotiations and let the contracts for the "privatised" SAR service from 2012."

Nick Harvey has an online petition calling for the retention of the 24 hour cover which can be signed at www.nickharveymp.com/petitions
