HAVE you got what it takes to run a marathon or a half marathon?

Well now's your chance. This June, North Devon sees the introduction of what might turn out to be the UK's most challenging coastal race staged to date.

The first North Devon Coast AONB Marathon, as part of the organisation's 50th anniversary programme, will be on Sunday, June 27, in aid of the North Devon Hospice.

Centred on the idyllic Woolacombe Beach, this gruelling route will test runners' resolve with a total ascent of approximately 3,300ft and mixed terrains including the South West Coast Path, surfaced highways and the rural public rights of way network.

For less avid runners, the half-marathon is an ideal track, reaching a total ascent of just 1,300ft. It's hoped that the race will become an annual fixture and a highlight in the long-distance and fell-runners' calendar.

Race organiser, Simon Oliver, from St John's Garden Centre, has lived in the area for his entire life and is very familiar with the coast path. He has been running for five years, competes in around 18 races annually both on and off-road and has completed 12 marathons to date.

"I have always found the coast path exhilarating to run and want to share the experience with more people," he said. "I've now put together this exciting course which I hope people will enjoy."

In true Devon style, a cream tea will await runners at the end of the course. Start, middle and finish points will be Woolacombe beach allowing friends and family to enjoy the beautiful three-mile stretch of golden sand while watching the runners. All finishers will receive a medal and there will be category prizes for winners.

Simon is seeking a maximum of 350 runners for this first year with both individuals and teams taking part. Local companies are being invited to put forward runners and all are being encouraged to raise funds though sponsorship for North Devon Hospice.

Ali Hunt, from the North Devon Hospice, added: "The marathon is going to be a wonderful opportunity for us all living in North Devon to showcase some of our stunning coastal scenery, and to have the backing of AONB and the National Trust is great. North Devon Hospice cares for around 100 local people every day free of charge; events like this help to raise more than £3m each year, which is what we need to provide all of our specialist services."

Application and sponsorship forms can be downloaded from www.northdevonmarthon.co.uk Alternatively contact race organiser Simon Oliver on 01271 870339 or e-mail northdevonmarathon@northdevonhos pice.org.uk. Runners can also set up their online sponsorship page through Just Giving. The registration fee is £20 for the full marathon and £18 for the shorter race. Non-runners interested in volunteering their time to help on the day will be greatly appreciated and should also contact Simon.
