THE North Devon Journal is today throwing its weight behind a campaign to buy a piece of life-saving medical equipment for North Devon District Hospital.

The British Heart Foundation Moving Hearts Appeal is trying to raise £38,000 to buy a machine which every year saves hundreds of people from heart-related diseases.

The machine, known as an echocardiograph (or Echo), can detect heart conditions in patients which might otherwise go undiscovered.

The hospital already has two echo machines. But demand for their use is increasing year-on-year. A third machine is needed to continue saving lives.

Owen Penney, from the British Heart Foundation, said: "We urgently need people — individuals, groups and businesses across North Devon and North Cornwall — to get involved and support the Moving Hearts Appeal."

● Full story on p 34 & 35.

But demand for their use is increasing year-on-year. A third machine is needed to continue saving lives.

Owen Penney, from the British Heart Foundation, said: "We urgently need people like you — individuals, groups and businesses across North Devon and North Cornwall — to get involved and support the Moving Hearts Appeal.

"Donations of time or of money can help us make a real difference to the lives of people, who are living with the pain and burden of heart disease in our local community."

The portable machine x-rays the structure of a patients' heart. This gives instant results about how a person's blood flows, how their heart is pumping and how the valves work.

With this information, rare and fatal conditions can be identified early on.

Medical staff at the cardio-respiratory department are also backing the campaign.

Christine Pope, senior chief cardiac physiologist at the hospital, said: "We have used these machines more and more as time has gone on.

"What we find with each patient can be entirely different, but in hundreds of cases it has proved vital.

"Having a third machine will ensure we can carry on treating people in the right way."

Not only will the machine cater for thousands of patients at North Devon District Hospital, but it will also be used at community hospitals across North Devon and North Cornwall.

This means patients who use hospitals at Ilfracombe, South Molton, Bideford, Torrington and Holsworthy could benefit from the new machine.

One man backing the campaign is Nick Rumsey, a South Molton man whose own life was saved by an echo machine.

He said: "I just hope people realise the importance of this machine. It turns people's lives around. Whether you are young or old, you never know when you will be in a position to need an echo."

People across North Devon have already pledged their time and money to help the cause.

Fundraising events being organised include cycle rides, walks and weight loss challenges, details of which this newspaper will bring you on a regular basis.

The Journal is now calling on its army of readers to back the campaign in any way they can: whether through time, money of just spreading the word.

● Turn to pages 34 and 35 to learn more about the appeal and find out how you can get involved.

Mr Langmead was also said to have sustained injuries in the fire.

The fire was contained to an upstairs bedroom and firefighters quickly brought it under control. The house was not severely damaged by the blaze.
Hundreds pay tribute to Donna and Debbie

HUNDREDS of people have signed online tribute pages in memory of Donna St John and Debbie Jones.

Friends, family, and wellwishers have been visiting pages on networking site Facebook to remember the women, who were close friends.

Donna St John, from Barnstaple, was born Donna Thorpe in 1975 and went to school in Torrington.

She had two teenage daughters, Natalie and Kara, and brothers, Shane and Joe.

On June 30, Donna wrote on her Facebook page: "I am the luckiest women alive, having two wonderful daughters."

Shortly before her death, she had started a relationship with security guard Dave Szmytki, who was due to return from Afghanistan after he was told about her death.

She worked as a shop assistant at the Co Op supermarket in Sticklepath.

Her public Facebook page showed that Donna enjoyed an active social life in Barnstaple and liked to go out with friends. She had been out in pubs and a club in the hours before she died, police said.

Online tributes to Donna described her as amazing, beautiful, bubbly, fun, happy, and "the life and soul of the party".

Paula Baker, from Torrington, told the Journal: "I met my husband on a night out with Donna.

"She was a lovely girl, happy-go-lucky, and my heart fills with sorrow for all the family.

"I first met her when I worked with her in Torrington, before she married. She was always grabbing life with both hands. She will be a great loss to a lot of people."

Debbie Jones was also born in 1975. She had married Neil Langmead, the only suspect in the murder inquiry, but the relationship had ended.

She had a daughter, Kayley, and a son, Daniel, and lived in Fort Mead Close, which is off Bicton Street, near Yeo Valley School.

She had her own business, Primrose Care and Cleaning, which was used by Wendy Phillips, from Yelland.

Wendy told the Journal: "She came to help me when my eyesight started to fail and she lit up my world. She was a wonderful girl and couldn't do enough for me and anyone else.

"She became a friend, always there at the end of the phone. She and Neil came to help me when I had flooding.

"The news has shook me rigid. I can't believe it. It's like losing a daughter, really.

"We used to sit and giggle and talk about silly things. She will be sadly missed."

And Sam Sharp wrote to the Journal to pay this tribute: "Debbie, you were such a bubbly, happy person who always had a smile.

"You were so caring, a friendly face we could always turn to."

WORKERS at Petroc in Barnstaple have been receiving redundancy letters.

The Sticklepath-based college said it was too early to say how many members of staff would lose their jobs because an appeals process was under way. But it is thought up to 100 people will be made redundant as part of the cost-cutting drive.

Letters were sent out towards the end of August after a consultation period.

In May, the college announced it was planning to make the cuts to save £2 million over the next two years.

The college, which employs 1,250 people in North Devon and Tiverton, said it was being forced to reduce running costs because of cuts in Government funding as well as an increase in costs for accommodation, staffing and building maintenance.

The college also said it had to service loans which it took out in preparation for a new building, the plans for which were mothballed last year, as well as repaying the debts it inherited when it merged with East Devon College in August, 2008. The redundancies are expected to hit those working in support and administration.

● If you would like to share your story or any information, email editorial@northdevonjournal.co.uk

Bees are on message with swarm warning

IF bees could talk, they would surely be appealing to the world with the message which 50,000 of them spelled out on the world's first bee billboard.

Paddy Wallace, of Quince Honey Farm, helped create the Save Our Swarms message by attracting live bees to create the wording, helping to attract attention to their dwindling populations.

The sign was created outside the farm in South Molton, North Devon, after owners were approached by wine company Banrock Station, which is contributing 5p per bottle to help the Co-Operative to raise £45,000 to improve research into the disappearing bee phenomenon.

Mr Wallace said: "One of our staff did a sponsored beard of bees, and the PR people at Banrock Station saw it and got the idea.

"We were quite keen to help out, because it's helping to raise money to research a very serious problem."

Mr Wallace, who runs the farm with his wife Jean and son Ian, created the sign using a pheromone that mimics the scent of the queen bee.

He gathered up thousands of insects from the hive and released them near the sign.

They only stayed long enough for pictures to be taken, before they were carefully scraped off and released again near their hive.

Mr Wallace said: "The bees certainly don't seem to suffer any kind of distress, although they would if they were kept away from the hive for long."

He said the Plan Bee campaign was particularly crucial, because there is no Government money to pay for research.

Nobody knows for sure why the bees are disappearing, but Mr Wallace suspects it is the Varroa mite, which weakens their defences and leaves them susceptible to disease. Bees are vital for pollinating crops.

Farewell to a familiar friend in our town

SO IT'S goodbye to our only town centre hardware shop. The end of one era in Barnstaple, and at the same time another era looms ominously on the south side of the River Taw.

More about that in a minute, but first, after 34 years selling nuts and bolts, shears and screwdrivers, paints and brushes, Denise and Peter Wilden have closed the doors of their ironmongers in Boutport Street for the last time.

Customers have been calling in to make final purchases, leaving "Good Luck" cards and reminiscing about the old-fashioned ways that made Wildens a must for locals and a curiosity for tourists.

During that time thousands of people have wandered around the crowded aisles looking for that particular widget, gadget or implement to put right a wrong in the home, occasionally distracted by the discovery of some tool they'd forgotten they needed and so must buy.

"It's been great fun," Denise said of the couple's career, an enterprise that included a shop in Bideford as well as Barnstaple.

"We've been happy here, and now it's time to call it a day. The last few weeks have been unbelievable. People have been coming in with little farewell presents and cards."

The well-wishers have included many holidaymakers who, over the years, were intrigued by the novelty of the shop, a relic of a bygone era when people could rummage about for a particular size screw or bolt and buy just one at a time if that's all they needed.

There was always a member of staff available to point them in the right direction for their light bulbs or a tap washer.

"They don't have places like this where they come from," added Denise.

The closure of Wildens will leave a distinct gap in Barnstaple's shopping. It's possible that someone will step into the breach they've left behind on Boutport Street, but for the moment we're left with a choice of less convenient national companies to satisfy our DIY demands, usually far enough away to require transport instead of a comfortable stroll into town.

Some might say it was inevitable.

The same thing happened in South Molton a few years ago when Kingdon's closed, leaving us with the same kind of trip to the Pathfields Industrial Estate where builders merchants have gathered to serve the building trade rather than the enthusiastic do-it-yourselfer.

But the Wildens survived, and thrived, in the modern era and the owners of the Bideford shop are carrying on, managing to do good business on Torridgeside.

So perhaps someone else will come along and take up where Peter and Denise have left off in Barnstaple.

If someone does open up a new hardware store in town they'll be part of what our new Barnstaple Town guide calls "North Devon's Commercial Heart".

The guide for 2010-2012 has just been published. I was pleased, but a little surprised, to read that: "Barnstaple has many positive changes on the horizon, is bound to go through a massive transformation in the next decade and we can look forward to this exciting revolution".

I think we have to understand that this optimistic copy was written some time ago, before the new age of austerity put paid, among other things, to a new development that had been planned for the Bear Street/Queen Street area, and before we got used to seeing the Shapland and Petter site on the south side of the River Taw grow increasingly more tired and the wheels of this "exciting revolution" grind virtually to a standstill there.

We can only hope the recession is as short-lived as our town guide assumes and that Barnstaple is indeed able to build on the timeless strength of the other attractions we can read about, like the Pannier Market, the Heritage Centre and Trail, and the upcoming Carnival and Fair.

In the short term the great revolution, I presume, must turn, mostly on Tesco and the construction of what looks like the international giant's huge new presence at Seven Brethren.

I hadn't quite realised how big the complex was going to be until I saw what they've demolished to make way for it. I'm sure the best retail brains in Europe have designed something outstanding for the old Brian Ford site.

No doubt it will make money for the company and its shareholders and be a state-of-the-art shopping experience.

But there are good reasons for my use of the word ominous at the start of the column, echoing the feelings expressed in March by several of our best local councillors.

We all fear the damage such a big store will do to the town centre. It's going to take something truly revolutionary not to hurt Barnstaple's character and charm but to complement it instead.

I'm sure the loss of our last ironmongers has nothing to do with Tesco, but nevertheless the bulldozers have begun a change, and now we can only hope they're not the harbinger of a ghost town some people seriously fear.
