The Water Gate Barnstaple is a great value pub to go for a meal out

There's a large dining area away from the main bar and each time I go with friends I make a beeline for the comfortable sofa and table seating area to the far rear. It's a good old fashioned pub with dark wood furniture, gilt mirrors on red, green and blue walls, subtle chandelier style lighting and patterned carpets. There a large menu at very reasonable prices. Roast of the day comes in currently at just £6.10 for roast beef, half a roast chicken or vegetarian portobello mushroom, chickpea and pumpkin seed roast with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and gravy. If you go on a Monday - Friday between 2 and 5 pm you can enjoy a 5oz gammon steak with free range egg and chips for just £4.49 or hand battered fish and chips for £4.99 which includes a cup of tea or small coffee. Some meals have been calorie counted under a healthy options section so anyone trying to lose weight ready for Summer won't struggle to find something to eat. There's a superfood chicken salad at 468 calories (currently £5.89) with butternut squash, spinach, edamame soya beans, broccoli, fine green beans, pomegranite seeds and red chard with balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Or if you prefer something more tasty try the sweet chilli noodles with chicken at 546 calories (£5.79). Then have a fruit salad and yoghurt healthy dessert at £2.20 (290 calories). All good sized portions and nicely cooked. Simply super value for money eating out.
