Two remain in hospital after head on collision on A377 in Bishops Tawton

Two drivers who were involved in a head on collision on the A377 in Bishops Tawton on Friday afternoon remain in hospital today.

The two men, aged 65 and 73 and both from Barnstaple, suffered chest injuries after their cars collided at around 4pm.

The road was closed at Bishops Tawton roundabout for a couple of hours, causing heavy congestion at rush-hour, after the silver Land Rover Freelander and grey Peugeot 205 crashed. Both vehicles are registered to the Barnstaple area.

When emergency services arrived at the scene, one of the men was still trapped in his car while the other driver was free of his vehicle. Both casualties were conscious and breathing.

Two fire crews from Barnstaple attended the scene and firefighters helped free the trapped driver from his vehicle.

Both drivers were suffering chest injuries and were taken to North Devon District Hospital, where they remain today.

Neither has sustained life-threatening or life-changing injuries.

Police said they are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

A diversion was in place through Lake until the road was reopened at 6pm.
