Saunton's Henry excels in championship win

SAUNTON have been celebrating their magnificent effort at the National Championships in Portreath, Cornwall.

The Masters finished first out of the 17 competing clubs with 3,082 points, beating title holders Woolacombe into second place and hosts Portreath third. In all, Saunton won 21 golds, 25 silver and 14 bronze medals.

Mark Henry excelled in winning all four sea events (swim, board, ski and Taplin) in the 45 to 49 age group.

In the Juniors, Saunton won the 17, 18 and 19 girls' Ocean Trophy, while also retaining the boys' trophy and the combined trophy in the same age group.

But with Jack Sherbourne being their only competitor in the boys' 14 years and Sam Ansdell in the boys' 15 years age bands they did well to come third in the under-16 boys trophy behind Rhoose and winners Woolacombe, with the girls coming second to Woolacombe in the under-16 aggregate.

In the junior totals, Saunton were runners-up on 2,460 points to Woolacombe's 3,248, with Rhoose third on 2,072 and Portreath fourth on 1,666.

James Bunney won three of the four individual under-16 ocean events, coming second to Great Britain swimmer Calum Jarvis on the swim and also winning the 1km run.
