Torrington clinch North Devon Golf League title

07:00 - 24-July-2008

TORRINGTON are the champions of the North Devon Golf League after getting the points they needed in the final two rounds.

A fourth in round five at Portmore was followed by a third in the last round at Libbaton, but Torrie had earlier opened enough of a gap to seal the Division 1 title.

They have won it by nine-and-a-half points from Libbaton, who won their home round largely thanks to Jason Middleton's 40 points.

In the round at Portmore, Torrington's Mike McLeod was the star individual performer with 34 points.

Things are a lot closer in Group B of the North Devon Veterans' League ahead of the final round at Libbaton on August 1.

Billy Bowles' 35 points inspired Royal North Devon to a win in their home round, and they now share top spot on 18 points with Portmore and Torrington.

Meanwhile, the final of the 2008 North Devon Rosebowl will be contested between Torrington and Royal North Devon.

Torrie made it through thanks to a narrow 3-2 defeat of Willingcott Valley in the semi-finals, while RND overcame Libbaton 4-1.

It was all looking relatively simple for Willingcott at Westward Ho! as the halfway stage approached – they were 3up in the first and fourth matches, and 2up in the last match.

But Torrie's fighting spirit shone and everything came down to the last green, where Gary Petherbridge and Peter Sturman won 2up.

In the other semi, Libbaton were up in four matches at the halfway stage, but also surrendered to RND at Willingcott Valley.
