At least two police cars attended the incident as well as highways crews who put ‘stop/go’ signs in place to manage the traffic.
Traffic queues were heavy between Braunton and Barnstaple for some time while crews arranged recovery of the car.
An eyewitness said: “It doesn’t seem too serious, just a shunt, but it has caused the traffic to back right up. Traffic is at a standstill on the roundabout and it’s backed up right towards Braunton too.
“It looks like it’s going to take ages to pass.”
The vehicle was recovered from the road at around 10.40am and the road was reopened as normal.
Devon and Cornwall Police said they informed the council of the damaged lamppost but said it posed no immediate concern as no wires were exposed.
